Why Taking Care Of Your Skin Is A Form Of Self-Care

Sponsored by Olay. All opinions are my own.

I’m sure by now most of you are familiar with the term ‘self-care’. It’s an idea that is widely discussed in the blogging community, as more and more people have access to (and share) different kinds of wellness, beauty, and even mental health tips across social media. While it can seem like a trendy concept, since becoming a Mummy, I’ve come to realize that it’s absolutely an important component of one’s wellbeing, especially as we get older and our lives become busier. It’s a way to recharge, to manage stress, and to avoid burnout as we wear more and more hats such as (in my own case) mother, business-owner, wife, and friend. Avoiding self-care is a sure fire way to deplete your energy, your immune system, and your state of mind. So what are some ways that we can introduce more self-care into our lives? Believe it or not, one of the easiest ways to take care of yourself, is through skincare, specifically hydration, and sun protection.

So what are some ways that we can introduce more self-care into our lives? Believe it or not, one of the easiest ways to take care of yourself, is through skincare, specifically hydration, and sun protection. You guys know how much I love Olay products, so I was excited to partner with them and show you their Olay Whip with SPF – my new personal favorite way to add some self-care into my morning rituals. I know, you may think that SPF as self-care sounds a bit odd, but I can attest that it’s very true. I personally know different women (and men) who have dealt with skin cancer, so not only is it an important factor in anti-aging, but it’s actually quite crucial in preventing illness. Plus, when you’re taking a few moments out of your day to do something healthy for yourself, it’s a signal to your subconscious that you’re worth caring for, and greatly improves your confidence. When I’ve done makeovers for women on TV shows in the past, I’ve encouraged them to start the day applying moisturizer all over, after the shower. Just the act of touching and massaging your legs, arms, tummy and face, stimulates the part of the nervous system that calms the mind and body. Did you know that tactile stimulation releases the love hormone, oxytocin? Those few moments that you might take in the morning to apply your moisturizer and SPF, also physically help you to distress and regain focus. These are precious minutes that you have to yourself and your thoughts. Skipping this step is like saying to yourself that taking care of yourself and your skin isn’t important, which I believe can lead to feelings of bad self-esteem (especially when your skin suffers).

There’s also the aspect of getting to know your body, and celebrating it. I’ve had stretch marks since I was 18, and sure there are days when I dislike them, but I’ve grown into my skin – literally – and I’m now a lot more in awe of my body, and proud of what it’s achieved, and every inch of what it looks like.

Now there were definitely days in the past that I didn’t have this mindset (I think of the days when I would roast with baby oil on the beach and cringe!). But, you live and you learn, and those days in the sun were some of the best times growing up! As we mature and become wiser, it’s always important to take the lessons we’ve learned and move forward. So I still make sure to enjoy time outside with friends and family – but now with SPF, without fail. Olay Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer with SPF is one of my favorite SPF moisturizers for a few reasons. For one, as I’ve mentioned on Instagram time and time again, it doesn’t leave any white residue and is the best way to prep your skin for makeup. And even though it packs a punch with tons of moisture, it’s also incredibly lightweight due to its innovative Active Rush Technology. And most of all, I just love the texture – it’s so light and airy, almost like whip cream. My skin just drinks it up, no matter the weather. Try your own, here!
