I’ve grown to love January 1st. It used to be a slightly depressing day – full of headaches from partying the night before, and feeling bummed out about going right back to school or work – until, a couple of years ago, I decided to embrace it as a positively exciting, fresh start. My Dad always says, you start the next day, the night before – and it’s so true. So I want to kick off the New Year, the night before -not only with a big party – but with some New Year resolutions that I’ll actually stick to!
This year, I’m making three sets of resolutions: lifestyle resolutions, beauty resolutions, and fashion resolutions.
So here’s the lifestyle one: enjoy the actual moment, not the photo opp. On a recent trip to San Francisco, I spent the weekend looking up. By that I mean, taking in the beautiful architecture, cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting an art gallery or two, and soaking up the city’s history. In LA, where I live, the daily grind means I rush from errand to errand, from meeting to meeting, with my head down, and without stopping much to smell the roses much. I realized that I spend far too much time stressing out over work schedules, or worse – staring into my phone – rather than looking up and enjoying the amazing city and landscape surrounding me. Being mindful is something I am reading more about, and the books I’ve enjoyed include Mindful London, and Wherever You Go, There You Are.
Second up, let’s talk fashion. These are simple. I never wear black, because I prefer the expressive nature of bright colors, but I’m going to wear more fabulous black shoes. They convey such an elegance, and I kicked off my newfound habit with a spree at Bluefly. I got these patent pointy Jimmy Choos, suede black Charlotte Olympia platforms with a gold sole, and lower black heels with a gold strip across the toe from Giuseppe Zanotti. (And yes, I realize I just made a New Year’s Resolution out of doing more shoe shopping. But hey, it’s all in the name of research!). I resolve to wear more lace: there’s barely any of it in my wardrobe, and I love the fabric.
Same goes for pencil skirts. On my days off or nights out when I’m not filming, I’ll often take the easy option and throw on some high waisted jeans. Time to make more effort and try some of the leather pencil skirts looking so sexy in the boutique windows right now.
My beauty New Year’s resolutions are to learn how to blow out my hair. I haven’t got a clue; I’m useless with a curling iron! I’m determined to master a beachy wave. So I’m hitting my friends’ new salon Striiike, owned by three gorgeous sisters in the industry (one’s a hair stylist, one’s a makeup artist and the other an eyebrow threader) to make friends with my curling iron.
Oh and finally, I need to wear bolder and brighter lipstick, more often. I’m an ‘eyes or lips’ girl when it comes to makeup, and usually, the smoky eye or cat eye will win. So I end up with a neutral, glossy lip. But experimenting with some dark reds and oranges recently, I noticed how different it makes your face, or an outfit, so I’m going to wear them more. If you have any color recommendations, I’m all ears!
What are your New Year’s Resolutions? I’d love to hear from you. Whatever you decide, I’m wishing you all a happy, healthy, safe and glamorous New Year!
