Out With The Cold, In With The New: Updating Your Spring Skincare Routine

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and it’s almost time to swap out our cozy sweaters and boots for t-shirts and slides. At the transition from season to season, it’s important to adjust your skincare routine accordingly, just as you would your wardrobe. The difference in climate makes a huge impact on your skin, and as Spring gets lighter and brighter, so too should your products. Read below for my tips on how to transition your skincare routine from Winter to Spring!

Shed Your Winter Skin
It’s easy for skin to get dull during Winter. When it’s cold and dry, you may not want to exfoliate as often, opting for more moisturizing treatments. This decrease in exfoliation may leave your skin ready for a major overhaul come Spring. Using a gentle exfoliant to buff off your dead skin creates a natural, glowing complexion. I absolutely love Sugar Face Polish by Fresh, because it scrubs your skin using strawberry seeds instead of harsh, chemically produced beads.

Swap Out Your Moisturizer
Changing your moisturizer is also a huge component of revamping your skincare as the seasons change. While heavy creams and moisture locking oils are great for Winter, Spring time requires something less greasy. My absolute favorite is Olay Whips, as it’s so light, but also deeply hydrating. It keeps your skin soft and smooth, but doesn’t go on quite as thick.

Avoid Multitasking Products
During Winter it’s easier to get away with using an SPF infused moisturizer or foundation, since you don’t need as much protection (well, unless you live in LA!). However, dermatologists recommend using sunscreen as a separate step in your routine to protect your skin as the sun begins to shine brighter, and more often. My favorite is this Supergoop! SPF. It protects your skin against the suns harsh rays, but also goes on a lot like a primer.

Beauty Cabinet Spring Cleaning
Spring is a great time for cleaning out your closets, but your products may also need a bit of an overhaul. I find that the change of season is a perfect time to do some quintessential Spring cleaning. It’s a good idea to swap out heavy coverage, liquid foundation for something lighter, like a tinted moisturizer. This one by Laura Mercier is oil free, buildable, and creates a natural looking finish. Also, use this time to toss any products that are expired. Most beauty products (makeup & skincare) last up to a year, while haircare products last a bit longer – about 2 years.

Stimulate Your Face!
Everyone loves a good facial. Besides being a relaxing experience, facials often include a massage that stimulates blood flow, and aids in overall circulation. Facial massage can also help to relax your facial muscles and prevent wrinkles and fine lines. If you want to give yourself a mini facial at home, I recommend using a rose quartz roller (like this one by Angela Caglia) to minimize puffiness and decrease inflammation.

Use A Mask (or 3)
Masks are a great way to get customized skin care at home. Skin Inc. is my favorite brand when it comes to mixing and matching to get my own personalized regimen. Each mask serves a different purpose such as brightening, anti-aging, and detoxifying. The best part is, the masks come in face shaped segments in order to use different components on different parts of your face!

    Great advice, thank you!
Would you advise applying a moisturiser with the sunscreen? If so, would you apply it before? X
