Gosh this January got chilly quickly! I’ve been so enjoying wearing my cosy knitwear over Christmas but for being out and about, I’ve found the perfect winter coat.
Home looks don’t always quite cut it as workwear. So how can you dress warmly and stay smart? A shearling coat. I never found it easy to be cosy and stylish especially when I was working as a journalist in London. Off duty I could be scruffy and wrapped in a hundred layers but you don’t want to be wearing a duvet when you’re in and out of meetings as you get far too hot so to find the perfect winter coat that I can throw on and not freeze in is great.
Shearling coats are a great update on the classic biker jacket, and there’s so many styles and shapes to choose, from aviator to long loose fitting. They aren’t just for winter either; I love to wear mine over a dress on mild autumn days, or even in a sunny spring. Their versatility makes them the perfect piece to invest in – shearling isn’t cheap but so worth it and you’ll wear it over and over and over again.
My top tip? Buy it slightly oversized. This gives you plenty of room to layer up your clothes underneath in the cold of winter, but also creates a nice boxy fit. And don’t be afraid to hunt for some faux shearling styles too – there are some great alternatives out there to suit every style and budget.
One thing I love about being in England is having seasons again, and this is my perfect winter coat.
