Going back to school or work after a long summer holiday can definitely feel daunting, especially if things are uncertain. I’ve been looking for small positives where I can and I find that having a couple of reliable staple pieces in my wardrobe can make me feel more confident and reassured in those first few days when I’m still getting into routine. This year Honor starts nursery (which seems both terrifying and very exciting), Mackenzie and I are getting into the September ‘back to work’ mentality and I’m organising my back to school wardrobe staples.
The key to a good September start is to prepare looks that can be worn from summer to autumn with minimal changes. A black trouser with a white shirt can be a go-to look for a summer night out in the city and, when paired with a brightly coloured blazer will give you that extra colourful boost for those first-week meetings or classes. Once the colder weather kicks in, add a cosy rollneck under your blazer for extra warmth. In terms of shoes, it’s hard (and sad) to move out of our comfortable summer sandals and straight into office friendly heels or boots so opt for a reliable pair of loafers that will ensure both comfort and that style.
If your back to school wardrobe staples are simple, do go the extra mile with your accessories. A statement earring can be the best expression of personality and occasion and it can range from something sparkly and elegant to something handmade earring which supports a small or local businesses. Similarly, a handbag can be the most versatile tool to transform you look. Carry a bold clutch for failsafe sophistication or go for a trusty tote where you can carry everything you need during a busy day.
Back to school wardrobe staples just need to be comfortable and versatile. Invest in statement pieces and donate anything you no longer wear to charity or to friends. Shop some of my go-to staple pieces below as well as some colourful additions for an extra shot of confidence. Now just to sharpen my pencils.
