My Mary Poppins Room

It’s time for another room reveal (I hope you’re all following @LouiseRoeHome?) and this is one I was most excited to see come together as I had imagined it for so long: my Mary Poppins room!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to create an eaves bedroom that would be wallpapered all over…yes, including the ceiling. In Los Angeles it was impossible so when we were planning our room layout, I knew I wanted to create an adorable bedroom in the eaves of our new house that was fully wallpapered. My wallpaper hanger thought I was mad but I’m delighted with how it’s turned out; the fairytale theme has been fully realised in my Mary Poppins room.

This wallpaper is Bengali by Pierre Frey (colour Antique Red) and it’s one I saw years ago, tracked down and fell completely in love with.  It’s beautiful and playful and I love it. We moved a radiator to the window from another part of the house as we felt it was a better fit for this room- we really tried to use what was already in the house where possible as keeping the character was very important to us. It also meant that we didn’t have to source and buy as many new fixtures…which is always a plus! I found a lovely similar red fabric also by Pierre Frey to make a blind for the window and added the little children’s chair and books…hence why it’s called the Mary Poppins room. I can really imagine her administering her spoonfuls of medicine to the Darling children in a room like this! The little chair cost me £10 in an antique shop…can you believe it?!

For the beds, I knew I wanted fabric covered headboards to match the walls so I found some very cheap bed frames and had the headboards made by the lovely Westcot House upholsterers in the matching Pierre Frey Bengali fabric (colour Multicolore). As you’ll see from the pictures, the red in the headboard fabric is ever so slightly darker than the red in the wallpaper- I love that this breaks up the busyness a little bit but it’s still matchy-matchy which is what I wanted! The bed sheets have the most gorgeous scalloping and the edges are in the exact red of the headboard fabric, from Sarah K– I’m obsessed with her bedlinen.

With such statement wallpaper, I wanted the accessories in this room to be fairly understated, with neutral colours and natural materials like bamboo and raffia. The cane bedside table was given to me by my friend Rebecca de Ravenel and the lamp and shade are Pooky, where lots of the lamps and shades that we have in the house came from. I found a bamboo pendant light on eBay for about £20 and the 1920s style mirror came from the same shop as the little chair. It’s called The Vintage Look in Henley-on-Thames and I always pop in for a browse if I’m in the area. The blue cushions (which I think complement the Bengali print so well) are a Raoul Textiles fabric called Vita, which if you’re in the UK is available from Turnell & Gigon.

And that’s my Mary Poppins room! I’m so in love with it and can’t wait to be able to have people to stay.
