Ask Louise: How To Dress For An Interview

“Hi Louise, I have a job interview in two weeks and the dress code of the company is business casual – what should I wear?” – Agnes

Making a first impression at a job interview is so important, regardless of which industry you work in. When you work in fashion, it can be quite acceptable at certain companies to express your edgy side (like in magazines, where I began my career), but in most cases when it comes to interviewing, it’s best to play it safe and go for cool, elegant classics with just enough of a twist to make you stand out. Whenever someone asks me how to dress for an interview or first day at a new office, I always recommend wearing simple, tailored pieces that fit really well, but add some intrigue to your look by trying a cool color palette and adding fun accessories.

I love Banana Republic’s fall collection, especially when it comes to their options for classic work-wear. I layered a chunky knit sweater with these low-slung cigarette pants. They’re dressy with a relaxed fit – appropriate for a business casual environment. For this first layer, I went with a tonal color palette in one of my favorite shades – camel! I personally love the way camel and persimmon-red look together, so I added a fun pop of color to my look with this punchy red blazer. The frayed edges add a chic, modern twist to it that make it a step beyond your average work blazer. Lastly, I topped off my look with these strappy velvet flats. It’s important to wear closed toed shoes to an interview, but they don’t have to be boring! Add texture by choosing a velvet style like this, in a fun color like rich burgundy, navy blue or berry purple for fall. Last tip? Top everything off with an eye-catching accessory. This embellished bangle was perfect (I’ve had many a meeting or interview where an accessory has become a talking point, so taking care of what you wear can be more significant than you think!).

When it comes to making a first impression for a job interview, turn up your style a few notches with key pieces that stand out. Paying careful attention to your look says a lot about your attention to detail and will count towards whether you get the role or not, trust me! Shop my full look below.
