My Make-Up Makeover

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to beauty: I stick to a makeup routine that is full of natural colors like brown, taupe and gold, and always apply the same kind of thin foundation, bronzer and peachy blush over the top. So when I got the chance to visit Laura Mercier’s headquarters for a consultation with their global makeup artist, Jerry Johnson, I jumped at the chance for some new ideas! I love getting to know the history and story behind a brand, and Jerry explained that Laura Mercier is very much about natural beauty – a ‘clean’ face and flawless complexion, without too may bright pigments in the makeup. With that in mind, Jerry got to work. Check out the products he used on me, and the awesome tips I walked away with…

Don’t overdue your base. It’s always better to add on with makeup, and much harder to pair back once you’ve applied too much. And skin should look natural, you still want to see freckles under makeup. A thin layer of primer followed by tinted moisturizer in Sand, was just right for me.

Use two lip glosses. The first, Rose Gold, for a warm shine, then dab Bronze Gold onto the center of your lower lip, for the perfect plump pout. And Jerry’s golden rule, don’t press your lips together, ‘lay it and forget it!’

Use a soft, waxy eyeliner, such as Kajal liner in Noir Supreme, and instead of painting a neat cat eye or line along the top of your lid, instead, slowly work the pigment into the lash roots. This opens up the eye and makes your lashes look double as thick. When applying mascara, start right at the very base of the lash, and gently wiggle your mascara wand. Doing this slowly really coats the lash from root to tip, and makes them look much thicker.
