A Happy Friendsgiving Table

Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday ever. Even though I’d never celebrated it before moving to LA, some of my happiest memories of living there took place around Thanksgiving and so it’s the one American tradition that we’ve brought home. We call it Friendsgiving to remind us of our get togethers in LA and all the people we miss.  November 26th will see us indoors again and so I’m even more determined to make it a celebration at home; I had been really excited to create a happy Friendsgiving table but I’ve decided that we should do it anyway. A little lockdown won’t ruin my decorating plans!

One thing I do always love about any kind of holiday (but particularly the foodie ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas) is the decorating part. I love planning my table; what colours and tableware I’m going to use as well as what decorating accessories I want to incorporate and how to style them. I’m a real perfectionist so I love seeing it all come together. A happy Friendsgiving table in 2020 is orange and gold with touches of dark green, dark red and white which makes it the perfect cross between autumn and winter. Shop everything I used below and read on to see how I put this look together.

First, as it’s only going to be a very small group I decided to use a table runner instead of a full tablecloth. I love this red one but this printed one would be lovely in December. Less laundry to do when we’ve got a toddler at the table! I love the colour of our table and chairs so have kept it uncovered as I like the dark wood against my orange pumpkins. You can’t go wrong with classic white plates- I’ve used the beautiful plates from Oka’s collection with Adam Lippes that I shared recently and I’ve put some Majolica plates on top. Mine are from Etsy but I’ve also got this set of four side plates which I love. I’ve topped each place setting with an embroidered napkin by Sophie Conran and added in one of her berry bunches– so cute.

With colourful plates I wanted my glassware to be kept fairly simple. A classic hobnail water jug goes with everything (I’ve also got this mini one for when it’s just Mackenzie and I) and I found matching tumblers on eBay which also come in a larger size for wine.

My favourite part of this take on a happy Friendsgiving table has got to be the candles. Clemantine coloured candles are so perfect for autumn and you can also mix in some gold tones with these tapered ones if you want a bit of a mismatched look. I’ve put mine in tiny brass candlestick holders which I’ve been collecting but Liberty have some lovely taller ones if you want some height. In amongst my place settings I’ve added some mini pumpkins that Honor chose from the farm shop, some cinnamon sticks and some more of Sophie Conran’s berry bunches and voila! A very cosy and very happy Friendsgiving table.

Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving holiday wherever you may be.
