An Amazing Scent For Bonding With Your Baby

Anyone who has ever held a baby, or even just been around one in close enough proximity to get a whiff of them, is probably familiar with that oh-so-delicious natural baby scent. That unmistakable newborn smell is intoxicating, especially if you’re a mum – personally, I am always sniffing the back of Honor’s neck like a maniac. I sometimes wonder what on earth she’d think if she had any idea, LOL! I was sad to find out from one of my new mummy friends that this smell goes away after a few months, and she told me to cherish it while I can. I’ve talked a lot on my blog about the science of color, but turns out there’s a science to smell, too.

Studies have shown that the sense of smell is more linked to our memory than almost any other sense. I’m sure you know the feeling – you’re carrying on with your day, and suddenly a particular smell hits you and throws you immediately back into a specific moment in your life – whether it’s a food, perfume, flower, or really anything else. Sometimes it can seem so random! So you can imagine how powerful this baby smell is for mums and dads, and even babies themselves. It makes me feel calm, happy, bonded with Honor, and at peace – it truly does. I’m so attached to it, I can’t imagine it dissipating – I wish I could bottle it up forever.

It turns out that the next best thing to actually doing that, can be accomplished in the laundry room. I recently discovered Dreft baby detergent, which has an iconic scent that is formulated to resemble that indescribable smell of babyhood. While some parents may worry about scented products for babies, this detergent is hypoallergenic and gentle on Honor’s skin. A recent Dreft survey actually showed that 8 out of 10 parents feel that using Dreft can make them feel more bonded with their baby.

One amazing tip I learned since giving birth? A baby nurse told us to wash our own PJs, t shirts and blankets in it, so that Honor also feels bonded to the smell. I’ve noticed that ;aying a blanket under her that has been washed with Dreft really does help her nap better, and helps her feel calm when we’re away, as she’s learned to associate the smell with us. This is particularly helpful for parents going back to work or going out of town (we’ll be leaving her with family for a couple days when we go to a wedding this Summer!). Plus, if you take a garment with you that has this scent, you’ll feel more connected to your baby while you’re away too. Everyone wins. It’s a newborn essential that I see us using for many months to come. Purchase Dreft purtouch on Amazon.com now and save $2 on your first Subscribe & Save order!

I’m so obsessed with the it that I even brought it with us to visit family in England. Like most of my friends, I regress to my childhood self at home – mum is already doing Honor’s washing, Thanks Mum!
