Springtime marks the beginning of outdoor entertaining, but before all the boozy beach and pool parties of the summer commence, I love to host chic, ladylike gatherings with my girlfriends. The flowers are blooming, the weather isn’t too hot or too cold – just perfect for having a little garden party on your back patio with a couple of your favorite gals. For the menu, I like to keep it simple with a seasonal salad filled with veggies from the farmer’s market around the corner with roast chicken, a few wine and champagne options, and a cute dessert to top it off.
A friend of mine had given me these homemade paint splatter macaroons as a present last year, and I thought they would be the perfect little treat for a spring ladies luncheon. Instead of slaving away all day making the macaroons from scratch (wish I had time for that, but sadly I don’t!), I bought pre-made vanilla macaroons from the deli at Whole Foods. I love how all the colors look together, especially when displayed on this cute cake stand from Anthropologie. If wine and champs aren’t your thing, serve this with a fancy French lemonade instead – a great option for your preggo girlfriends too! Read below for the cute and easy DIY.
Supplies needed:
A dozen macaroons (or two per guest)
Pack of assorted gel food colors (I bought mine from a crafting store)
Vodka (Yep! Don’t worry, the alcohol evaporates and you won’t taste it at all)
A food-safe paint brush
Steps:
1) Protect your surface with a garbage bag, paper towels, or butcher paper. You can even do this outside. Mix a pea-sized amount of the food coloring gel with a teaspoon of vodka – it makes the perfect solvent and evaporates without a trace. Just a warning that the paint can stain certain surfaces (including your hands), so use extra caution!
2) Take your brush and soak it in the paint, and create dribbles or splatter marks by holding it between your thumb and middle finger, then “tapping” the brush with your index finger. Experiment with different techniques! There is no right or wrong way to do this. Repeat with each color, and make sure to wash your brushes in between to keep the colors bright.
3) Allow to dry for 30 mins to an hour, and repeat on the other side. Enjoy!
