Last week, I had the honor of judging the Miss Universe Competition in Florida. It was an incredible experience to be surrounded by so many beautiful, talented, and inspirational women – an evening I’ll never forget, that’s for sure. My makeup artist created an Old Hollywood-inspired look complete with a stunning smoky eye and the result was nothing short of brilliant. I loved the final look so much, I asked my resident beauty guru Rachel Wood to give me some pointers on getting the perfect smoky eye at home so I could share them with you!
Here’s a step-by-step guide to DIY your perfect smoky eye:
Step 1: Using a small eyeshadow brush that’s firm, apply a soft-toned grey eyeshadow on the lid from the lash line to the crease.
Step 2: Clean off the remaining shadow on the eye shadow brush with a tissue, and blend the edge of the shadow around the crease area on the lid so the color blends on the edges and has a smoky feel.
Step 3: Apply a black pencil eyeliner on the inside of the water line of the eye and apply small black dots along and in between the top lashes.
Step 4: Use a small pencil shaped brush to smudge the liner under the eye and on top of the lashes. If you don’t have a brush, use your finger.
Step 5: Curl the lashes with an eyelash curler and finish with a thickening mascara.
Rachel, what is one thing to avoid when applying a smoky eye?
Always do your makeup first, and your foundation after. This way, you can easily tidy up any mishaps.
What eyeshadow colors do you recommend for this look?
This simple smoky look works best with browns, dark blues, dark grays, and plums. If you’re looking for a rock and roll twist, it’s fun to play with metallic bronzes and coppers, too.
What type of makeup on the face pairs well with a smoky eye?
For a look that’s gorgeous, not gaudy, stick with a fresh face that looks glowing and effortless.
