I love all things woven and it makes for the ultimate outdoor furniture. The new house has touches of wicker, rattan, cane and even bamboo in various rooms and I love mixing these materials with soft upholstery, jewel coloured velvet and plump colourful cushions. Woven materials have long signalled the joy of summer for me and my essentials in the warmer months include wicker picnic baskets, straw sun hats and rattan furniture. With ‘home’ being very much on the mind at the moment I’ve been thinking about all my favourite outdoor furniture, enjoying the last days of summer with outdoor dinners, barbecues and evening drinks. Fingers crossed the sun lasts just a little bit longer.
The great thing about woven materials is that they go with everything. Traditional homes look great with elements of natural textures (I love the thatched cottage feel) but even fans of contemporary design can find ways of incorporating wicker, rattan or cane into their interiors. It can also be a fairly inexpensive way of kitting out a home- I found lots of things on Etsy and eBay, most of which we re-upholstered or re-worked into new pieces. You can find amazing items from antique dealers, in thrift stores and in charity shops but there are also lots of companies that have jumped on the rattan bandwagon and created amazing furniture for the house.
When it’s warm enough, I love nothing more than eating outside. Breakfast in the sun, lunch in the shade and supper as the sun goes down. We’ve been using our outdoor furniture all summer and are continuing to use it whenever the weather allows. For this supper we added a simple tablecloth- I love this white linen one– as well as leaf print plates and bamboo cutlery from Maison Margaux. Shop my picks of the ultimate outdoor furniture below.
