Front Roe Travel Guides: Tulum

Bringing you another edition of #FrontRoeTravelGuides today! This time, the place that Mackenzie and I took our ‘second honeymoon’ – Tulum, Mexico. This city has gotten lots of attention in recent years, thanks to so many lovely photos floating around Instagram and Pinterest. And I must say, it definitely lived up to our expectations in terms of beauty and relaxation – and it’s a damn good place to take a pic! It’s quirky and peaceful, with amazing food, hotels, and white sand beaches. It’s the perfect place for a honeymoon, girl’s weekend, or if you just need a magical escape – though keep in mind that since it’s become such a hotspot that hotels can be quite pricey. Make sure to do your research ahead of time to find great deals!

Where To Stay:
Azulik: We stayed at the beautiful Azulik for the first half of our trip, and you’ll probably recognize its famous open hut style architecture, with bedrooms and even bathtubs being directly open to the beach. Waking up to the sunrise just outside your bedroom each day feels like an absolute dream.
Sanara Tulum: This is a gorgeous luxury eco hotel, which feels more like a traditional resort but is no less amazing. The architecture is adorably boho and modern, with some suites even having their own private pool.

Where To Eat & Drink:
The Real Coconut: at the Sanara for delicious healthy food, and one of the best brekkies I’ve ever had. Try one of their smoothie bowls or yogurt slides for breakfast, or their nachos and guac for lunch!
Posada Margherita: for the best handmade pasta in all of Tulum, and great cocktails on the beach. Try their watermelon cooler!
Raw Love Tulum: in the Ahau Hotel for the best açaí bowls ever.
Hartwood: this restaurant is so popular that people line up from around 4.30pm (it opens at 6) and you can’t book a reservation. But it’s very famous and allegedly incredible food! We got there at 6 and seatings were already all booked up, so we wandered next door to Gitano which is an awesome Mezcal bar & restaurant. It’s very romantic, rustic and low-lit – with excellent cocktails. And no wait 🙂 They even have live music on Sunday, Wednesday & Thursday, and dinner & dancing on Friday, Saturday. Try their ceviche and grilled avocado.
Batey Tulum: for the best mojitos in town and fun vibes!
Coqui Coqui: a very short walk from Hartwood, this looks like a crumbling graffiti wall until you walk down the side to the beach and discover an amazing, stone-walled, boutique hotel with it’s own parfumerie and mellow candle-lit beach bar.

Where To Explore:
Cenotes Dos Ojos: don’t miss a chance to swim in any of the numerous cenotes (sink holes). We ended up at this one and had the whole place to ourselves! So beautiful.
Joya Riviera Maya
Mayan Ruins: Tulum is very close to many ancient ruins, with Chichen Itza being the best one to see (though there are many to choose from). It’s worth hiring a tour guide and taking a day trip to check several of them out.
Reserva de la Biosfera de Sian Kaan: didn’t make it here, but was recommended by a Mexican friend of mine. It’s a nature reserve where you can swim through lagoons, interact with wildlife and see stunning Mayan ruins. I definitely plan to return and go back here!
Cirque do Soleil, Joya: If you’ve never seen one of the epic Cirque du Soleil performances before, check out this one at the Riviera Maya hotel. We didn’t get a chance to go, but it got great reviews and is a wonderful option for a fun night out.
