The New School Of Summer Wedding Style

“Louise, I’m attending SIX weddings this summer – what do I wear, help!” – Charlotte

When Summer wedding season rolls around, I always start getting tons of questions via Ask Louise about what to wear. ‘Tis the season, after all! Dressing yourself for so many weddings can seem daunting, but truthfully, wedding attire these days is so much easier (and more fun!) than it used to be. Weddings today don’t have to be the old traditional, ultra-formal garb or pastels and frills. You can still maintain your sense of style and put together a really chic, comfortable look that will let you dance until the wee hours.

I’ve come up with a simple formula for Summer wedding attire that says goodbye to the traditional cocktail dress, and hello to a more fashion-forward vibe that is still appropriate for both casual and formal ceremonies. First things first…

The Slip Dress
I’ve written about my obsession with slip dresses before, and in my opinion they’re the frock to wear to weddings. They drape over your body in all the right places while still being breathable in Summer, making them sexy but not overly so (remember to always let the bride shine). Investing in the perfect slip dress is an absolute must, as you’ll wear the same exact one to a wedding but also to brunch later on. They’re also perfect year round, so you won’t have to worry about buying a wedding look that sits in the back of your closet for the rest of eternity – trust me, you’ll want to wear it all the time.

Mules Rule
Next up in the formula are mules or slides, either with a low heel or none at all. Summer weddings especially don’t require sky high heels, so take advantage of the opportunity to sport a comfy shoe and hit the dance floor all night, cocktail in hand. Mules are my top must-haves this season (stay tuned for an entire blog post about them coming to the blog next week!), and just like slip dresses are completely worth investing in. Of course they go with dresses, but think easy mom jeans and sweaters in the Fall, too.

Statement Earrings
Hands down, the easiest way to add a little party to your look. Big statement earrings instantly take this simple outfit formula into dance mode, so get ready. Go for gold in summer – the warm tone goes perfectly with a tan and bronzed makeup.

Top It Off
Lastly, for a very English wedding tradition, top off your look with a summery hat. While it’s totally appropriate in England for women to wear them during the wedding ceremony, if it makes you feel more comfortable just remove it inside the chapel and add it back on when it’s time to party. They’re especially perfect for outdoor weddings, and add such a fun and unexpected element to your look. What do you guys think? Would you wear this look to a wedding?
