The Imperfectly Perfect Hairstyle of the Moment

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I recently took the plunge and cut my hair. I couldn’t resist the it-hairstyle of the moment any longer, and asked my trusted team of beauty geniuses (perks of working in fashion and entertainment!) to chop my tresses into the lob, or long bob. I. Love. It. And I think the key to the look is bring a messy, undone wave to the style, which keeps it cool and modern and (dare I say it) a little rock and roll. Here are my tips to making that perfectly-imperfect look your own, whether or not you’re ready to chop or just trying out the vibe.

Step 1: Start with freshly washed hair that has been rinsed really, really well and towel dried. Spray a volumizer (my current favorite is Tresemme Youth Boost Flex Bounce Mousse) at the roots, and section by section comb through to ends.

Step 2: Blow dry your hair upside down, using only your fingertips. No brushes allowed! Finger combing creates extra texture.

Step 3: Flip your hair back to right side up and arrange a messy side part with your fingers.

Step 4: Heat up a 1 inch curling iron and section your hair into imperfect horizontal sections. Holding your iron horizontally, and start curling your hair in alternating directions; one section wrap the hair up and the next section wrap your hair down.  Be sure not to curl the ends, which makes your look too goody goody and perfect, instead hold them out with your fingers. Here’s a great tip for beauty beginnings: An excellent way to get comfortable with handling a curling iron is to practice your movement of wrapping the hair around the barrel while the iron is unplugged. Once you feel comfortable with how to wrap your hair around the iron, then you can plug it in and go to town.

Step 5: When whole head is curled flip back upside down and spray a texturizer or dry shampoo all over your hair.  Let it set in hair for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then shake out any excess product with your hands.

Step 6: Lastly, while standing in front of a mirror arrange any pieces that are too wild for your liking. If you want a slightly more polished look you can use a pump of Tresemme Youth Boost Shine Lotion on your fingertips and run a small amount through the ends of your hair.
